Neste trabalho, buscamos definir de que forma podemos tratar do WhatsApp ao caracterizá-lo como um chat, pautando-nos por Araújo (2010). Além disso, reconhecendo o fato de que os gêneros digitais promovem diversas inovações à comunicação, propomo-nos a discutir algumas características do WhatsApp, a saber: (1) as referências a elementos de natureza não verbal, como fotos e emoticons; e (2) a sobreposição e o intervalo temporal entre as mensagens dos interlocutores. Ao fazê-lo, chamamos atenção para a influência que tais características podem apresentar no modo como se retomam entidades já presentes no discurso, esperando, portanto, poder contribuir para pesquisas nessa área. Dessa forma, visamos, também, a apontar como as características discutidas podem aproximar o WhatsApp mais da fala ou da escrita prototípica.
In this paper, we aim at defining how we can refer to WhatsApp when characterizing it as a chat, guiding our analysis through Araújo (2010). Recognizing the fact that digital genres promote several innovations to communication, we discuss some features of WhatsApp, namely: (1) references to elements of non-verbal nature, as pictures and emoticons; and (2) the overlap and the time interval between the interlocutors’ messages. By doing so, we focus on the influence these features might have in the accessibility of previously mentioned entities, hoping, thus, that we can contribute to research in this area. Therefore, we also aim at indicating how the aforementioned characteristics may approximate WhatsApp to prototypical speech or writing.
