a carioca era preguiçosa, apesar de evidências em
contrário encontradas na mesma literatura de viagens e em
outras fontes do século XIX, vem sendo repetido
acriticamente nos últimos duzentos anos, inclusive por
historiadores. Pretendo aqui jogar este preconceito por terra,
munido principalmente de outras crônicas de viagens e de
anúncios de jornais, estes últimos aqui trabalhados de maneira
sistemática num perÃodo de 40 anos, e provar que não só as
mulheres pobres e as escravas trabalhavam, mas também as
senhoras cariocas, cujo trabalho permaneceu “invisÃvelâ€.
The bias of some travelers against the carioca lady
as being lazy, despite evidence to the contrary found in the
same travel literature and other sources of the nineteenth
century, has been perpetuated uncritically in the past two
hundred years, even by historians. I propose to put an end
to this bias armed mainly with other travel chronics and
newspaper classified advertisements that were analyzed in a
systematic way over a period of 40 years, and demonstrate
that not only lower class women and female slaves worked,
but also the carioca lady, whose work remained “invisibleâ€.
