The present study analyzes the epistemic contributions drawn from the debate between the philosopher Jürgen Habermas and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI (Joseph Ratzinger), in which they dealt with the pre-political foundations of secular society. The study will deal with the very different perspectives between the debaters (antagonistically linked to reason and faith) to investigate the pre-political moral foundations of the Liberal State - in order to verify what would keep the society cohesive, independently of the normative resources of the Democratic state. From each co-author analysis, this study will draw epistemological contributions from each view, seeking to confront them and, perhaps, find some common factor between both views.
