Low back pain during pregnancy has been considered a normal and even expected occurrence, which has contributed to the lack of prophylactic and curative measures. Aquatic exercise is considered the ideal activity for pregnant women, since the benefits of physical activity in immersion allow for the prevention and improvement of musculoskeletal discomfort. In addition to the various physiological changes that occur during immersion in heated water, the physical properties of water offer many advantages, including: promoting general muscle relaxation, reducing sensitivity to pain, reducing muscle spasms, improving cardiac and pulmonary efficiency, improving muscle strength and elasticity, and maintaining weight and body composition at adequate levels. Exercises performed under supervision, appropriate for each gestational period and circumstance, in appropriate environments and for motivated pregnant women, undoubtedly mean great benefits for both mother and fetus. This study highlights the practice of therapeutic aquatic exercises for the prevention or reduction of the frequency of low back pain.
