Edward Said, em seu Cultura e Imperialismo, acentua que para se compreender o passado e reescrevê-lo, é necessário que o intelectual evoque o passado reinterpretando-o e analisando-o a partir de um olhar crÃtico, utilizando-o como subsÃdio para interpretar o presente, uma vez que “ambos se modelam mutuamente, um inclui o outro [...]â€(SAID,1995, p. 34). Partindo de afirmações como essa, pretendemos apresentar algumas passagens do livro Confissões, de Darcy Ribeiro e estabelecer uma discussão com posicionamentos de estudiosos - como Philippe Lejeune, Paul de Man e Pozuelo Yvancos - que têm trabalhos importantes sobre o tema da escrita autobiográfica.
