Este artigo discute a espacialidade das relações no Maranhão, entre finais do século XVII e o início do XVIII, por meio da intensa relação entre São Luís e os espaços mais ou menos distantes do núcleo urbano, como as cercanias da cidade e demais sertões. As práticas e experiências dos sujeitos que viviam e circulavam por esses diferentes espaços denotam a complementariedade existente entre eles. Esta perspectiva pode ajudar a compreender a complexidade da dinâmica espacial da região, para além de contraposições entre mundo urbano e mundo rural, ou entre cidade e sertão. Busca-se, além disso, contribuir para o entendimento do papel da cidade de São Luís no próprio processo de ocupação da região e de constituição da territorialidade maranhense.
This article discusses the spatiality of relations in Maranhão between the end of the seventeenth century and the beginning of the eighteenth century, through the intense relationship between São Luís and the spaces more or less distant from the urban center, such as the closeness of the city and other backwoods. The practices and experiences of the people who lived and passed through these different spaces denote the complementarity between them. This perspective can help to understand the complexity of the spatial dynamics of the region, as well contrasts between the urban world and the rural world, or between the city and the backwoods. It also seeks to contribute in the understanding of the role of the city of São Luís in the process of occupation of the region and the constitution of the territoriality of Maranhão.
