O artigo discute a grande enchente do rio Amazonas, a maior registrada no século XX na região. Confrontando uma documentação de governo do estado, busco revisar os usos da grande enchente, por parte das autoridades amazonenses, como instrumento catalisador de recursos federais para o Amazonas que, há quase meio século, vivia uma crônica crise econômica e um ostracismo político que governantes e empresários amazonenses, valendo-se da enchente, visavam vencer. Para tanto, animaram a extraordinária alagação a luz de uma narrativa apocalíptica proveniente dos discursos oficiais que apresentava a grande cheia amazônica, junto aos órgãos federais, como um “cataclismo” apocalíptico. Questionar os sentidos e as funções desta narrativa é outra das propostas desse artigo.
The article discusses the great flood of the Amazon River, the largest recorded in the 20th century in the region. Comparing state government documentation, I seek to review the uses of the great flood, by Amazonian authorities, as an instrument to catalyze federal resources for Amazonas, which, almost half a century ago, was experiencing a chronic economic crisis and political ostracism that governments and Amazonian businessmen, taking advantage of the flood, aimed to win. To this end, they animated the extraordinary flood in the light of an apocalyptic narrative originating from official speeches that presented the great Amazon flood, together with federal agencies, as an apocalyptic “cataclysm”. Questioning the meanings and functions of this narrative isanother of the proposals of this article.
