As linhas a seguir são partes das minhas memórias que foram construídas a partir de vivências marcadas durante os dois anos que antecederam ao majestoso e importante evento internacional − o V Congresso Latino-americano de Educação Bilíngue para Surdos, em Porto Alegre, de 20 a 24 de abril de 1999. Foi um apogeu que vivemos, surdos e intérpretes, com pleno apoio da Federação Nacional de Educação e Integração dos Surdos/escritório regional do Rio Grande do Sul. Apresentarei alguns fatos pontuais que marcaram o período de 1997 a 1999, fatos descritos pelos registros dos meus olhos e pela minha constituição empírica enquanto tradutor/intérprete da Libras e militante dos Movimentos Surdos. Há uma grande visibilidade da língua, dos surdos e da figura deste profissional intérprete, que está se construindo. Existia um agito e uma expectativa que ainda não sabíamos dos desfechos. Há três marcos fundamentais na história da construção da profissão de tradutor/ intérprete de Língua de Sinais (Tils), nestes dois anos: a vinda do professor Carlos Bernardo Skliar para a Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS); o primeiro curso de formação para Tils do Brasil, em 1997 e o grande evento do V Congresso. Para este estudo, usei a história oral como fonte, cujos relatos pessoais recortados são fundamentais para que a história dos nossos movimentos como Tils seja registrada e consolidada. Destarte, destaco a preciosa colaboração da professora doutora Madalena Klein, da Faculdade de Educação da Universidade Federal de Pelotas, da profissional Tils da UFRGS, Ângela Russo, e da presidente da Associação Gaúcha dos Intérpretes da Língua de Sinais (AGILS), Maria Cristina Viana Laguna. Sinto muito orgulho de ter feito parte desse grupo que colaborou para que a educação bilíngue de surdos no Brasil fosse consolidada. Os Tils tiveram reconhecido seu primeiro curso de formação. Esses fatos estão em nossa história e que hoje nos constituem.
The following lines are parts of my memories that were built from experiences marked during the two years that preceded the majestic and important international event - the V Latin American Congress of Bilingual Education for the Deaf, in Porto Alegre, April from 20th to 24th, 1999. It was a heyday that we lived through, deaf and interpreters, with the full support of the National Federation of Education and Integration of the Deaf/regional office of Rio Grande do Sul. I will present some specific facts that marked the period from 1997 to 1999, facts described by the registers of my eyes and by my empirical constitution as an interpreter – Tils, of Brazilian sign language – Libras, and a militant of the interpreters and deaf movements. There is a great visibility of the language for the first time, the deaf and the figure of the interpreter sign language as a professional. This profession is being built from the 80’s in a more visible way. There was excitement and a very high expectation that we still didn’t know about the outcome. There are three fundamental milestones in the history of the construction of the sign language interpreter profession in these two years: the arrival of Professor Carlos Bernardo Skliar to the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS); the first training course for Tils of Brazil in 1997 and the major event of the V Congress. For this study, I used oral history as a source, whose personal accounts are essential for the history of our movements as Tils, to be recorded and consolidated. Thus, I would like to highlight the precious collaboration of Professor Madalena Klein, from the Faculty of Education of the Federal University of Pelotas, a Tils from UFRGS Ângela Russo and the president of the Gaucho Association of Sign Language Interpreters (AGILS), Maria Cristina Viana Laguna. I am very proud to have been part of this selected group that helped to consolidate bilingual education for the deaf in Brazil and the profession of sign language interpreter. Tils had their first recognized training course. These facts are in our history and that constitute us today.
