Este artigo apresenta um balanço de uma das mais conhecidas correntes historiográficas alemãscontemporâneas, a saber, a ciência social histórica. À luz da crÃtica lançada à história social porparte de autores que se filiam a outras tradições historiográficas, tais como a nova históriacultural, a micro-história e a história do cotidiano, o autor procura aprofundar a capacidade deautocrÃtica da tradição da ciência social histórica por meio de uma reflexão sobre os seus limitese as suas potencialidades. A sua proposta consiste em uma reformulação dos pressupostosbásicos da história social, sendo sintetizada pelo rótulo ciência histórica da sociedade.
This article analyzes the history and the theoretical underpinnings of one of the most wellknown
German contemporary historiographical traditions, namely, the historical social science.
Departing from the criticism leveled at social history from historians hailing from new cultural
history, micro-history and the history of everyday-life, the author attempts to deepen the capacity
of historical social science for self-reflection by means of a survey of its limits and future
perspectives. His proposed reconstruction of many of social history’s theoretical and
methodological presuppositions is synthesized by the term historical science of society.
