Este trabalho tem por objetivo fazer uma descrição e análise da modalidade facultativa como recurso discursivo e estratégia argumentativa nos discursos do Papa Francisco em língua espanhola. Para isso, recorreu-se aos estudos relativos ao funcionalismo linguístico e discurso e aos estudos referentes à modalidade facultativa na seara da Linguística. Nesse sentido, foram selecionados os 147 discursos proferidos pelo Romano Pontífice em língua espanhola no ano de 2022 para a composição do córpus. Após a análise dos discursos, verificou-se que ocorre, preferencialmente, a não-inclusão [-inclusão] do Santo Padre na instauração da modalidade facultativa, optando por modalizar a facultatividade em posição focalizadora e com orientação modal para o Evento. Por fim, concluiu-se a relevância da modalidade facultativa como recurso e estratégia argumentativa, em que esta é engendrada no discurso tendo em vista as intenções e os propósitos comunicativos do falante (Papa Francisco).
This work aims to describe and analyze the facultative modality as a discursive resource and argumentative strategy in Pope Francis' speeches in Spanish. To this end, we resorted to studies relating to linguistic functionalism and discourse and studies relating to the facultative modality in the field of Linguistics. In this sense, the 147 speeches given by the Roman Pontiff in Spanish in 2022 were selected to compose the corpus. After analyzing the speeches, it was found that, preferentially, the non-inclusion [-inclusion] of the Holy Father occurs in the establishment of the facultative modality, opting to modalizer the facultative modality in a focusing position and with a modal orientation towards the Event. Finally, the relevance of the facultativemodality as a resource and argumentative strategy was concluded, in which it is engendered in the speech considering the intentions and communicative purposes of the speaker (Pope Francis).
