O presente artigo analisa a tradução para o português do dialeto literário do romance For Whom the Bell Tolls, de Ernest Hemingway, ou seja, os recursos empregados para caracterizar lingüísticamente os personagens, definindo as relacões entre estes e criando a ilusão de que dialogam em espanhol. Conclui-se que esse dialeto literá- rio se perde parcialmente na tradução por não conseguir reproduzir os matizes dialógicos do original.
This article analyzes the Portuguese translation of the literary dialect used in the novel For Whom the Bell Tolls, by Hemingway, that is, the resources used to depict its characters linguistically, so as to define the relationships among them and build up the illusion that they talk in Spanish. The conclusion is that such literary dialect is partly lost in the translation, which is unable to reproduce the dialogic nuances of the original.
