A breve exposição que se segue tem o objetivo de expor a importância da noção de poder despótico na ciência política clássica, muito em particular na elaboração de Montesquieu. Ainda que a noção de despotismo tenha origem na Antiguidade, com Montesquieu ocorre uma redefinição paradigmática que possibilita pensar a identidade do Ocidente, tendo o Oriente como alteridade negativa. Essa formulação teve uma fortuna enorme e muito influenciou a teoria política liberal dos séculos seguintes. O texto baseou-se fundamentalmente nos escritos do próprio Montesquieu e outros autores clássicos.
The brief statement that follows aims to expose the importance of the concept of despotic power in classical political science, in particular in the elaboration of Montesquieu. Although the notion of despotism has its origin in Antiquity, with Montesquieu occurs a paradigmatic redefinition that allows thinking the identity of the West and the East as negative alterity. This formulation had a huge fortune and greatly influenced the political liberal theory the following centuries. The text was based primarily on the writings of Montesquieu and other classical authors.
