By telling the life of Eufrasia Teixeira Leite, the article discusses the difficulties and advantages of using biography to understand the historical phenomena. Granddaughter of coffee barons and daughter of a capitalist of this agricultural enterprise, Eufrasia was one of the first women to enter the global financial market in the nineteenth century. Rich by inheritance, millionaire by talent: her life story is worthy of note. Her family history and her relationship with Nabuco enable tracing, to the general public, disputes at the Imperial politics: Conservative x Liberal (how close and how far they were), fall and rise of political offices, the struggle for slavery abolition. The history of her inheritance left largely to the city of Vassouras - and the lawsuit filed by her unsatisfied relatives - also allows us to understand the history of Casa da Hera Museum / IBRAM/MinC, dedicated to the memory of the Teixeira Leite family and the memory of the coffee period in the Vale do Paraiba.
