Procuraremos demonstrar, dentro dos limites desse artigo, alguns aspectos da cidade de Mariana-MG,durante a Primeira República, um ambiente marcado pela prática cultural que remonta ao passado colonial, mas permeado pelas apropriações de novos discursos, costumes e representações. Com tantas significativas mudanças acontecendo no âmbito mundial e no quadro brasileiro, sugerimos que a vida social em Mariana encontrava-se num limiar de difícil definição, na batalha entre o “passado” e o “moderno”. Vale destacar que a região possuiu uma trajetória singular, não homogênea e repleta de contradições. Portanto, trata-se de compreender os limites das apropriações e transformações de elementos da modernização no município. Ademais, daremos destaque a alguns aspectos sobre o cenário político de Mariana.
We seek to show, within the limits of this article, some aspects of the city of Mariana, Minas Gerais during the First Republic, an environment characterized by cultural practice dating back to the colonial past, but permeated by appropriating new discourses, representations and customs. With so many significant changes taking place world and in the Brazilian situation, we suggest that social life in Mariana was in a difficult threshold setting, the battle between the "past" and "modern." It is worth noting that the region possesses a unique trajectory, inhomogeneous and full of contradictions. Therefore, it is to understand the limits of the appropriations and transformations of elements of modernization in the city. Furthermore, we will highlight a few aspects of the political landscape of Mariana.
