Muitas foram as reformas empreendidas durante o século das luzes no ambiente luso-brasileiro. Deste modo, se faz necessário também ressaltar algumas persistências do pensamento tradicional que puderam ser percebidas neste perÃodo; principalmente nos escritos de homens a serviço da Coroa no mundo colonial. Portanto este trabalho objetiva discutir o pensamento polÃtico de Thomáz Antônio Gonzaga, ouvidor da capitania de Minas Gerais durante a década de 80 do século XVIII, a partir de seu “Tratado de Direito Naturalâ€, tese com a qual pretendia concorrer a uma cadeira no curso de Leis da Universidade de Coimbra, para analisar a influência, em toda a sua formação acadêmica, do pensamento tradicional, neste caso da filosofia dos jesuÃtas, a Nova Escolástica.
