Resumo Inglês:

This paper presents an overview of studies on Galician phonetics and phonology. If in the 1960s, Galician phonetics was still virtually unknown, progress made since then has sought to situate studies of these disciplines in the arena of international linguistic research. Due to the priorities that occupied the research agenda during the 1970s and 1980s (mainly related to corpus planning and standardisation), work on Galician phonetics did not begin to develop until the 1990s, and was carried out primarily at the Instituto da Lingua Galega (Galician Language Institute). Since then, several works of an experimental nature, both in the study of segmental and supersegmental phonetics (mainly, intonation), have been completed. However, the limited resources that are dedicated to this branch of Galician means that significant gaps still exist. Regarding phonology in Galicia, the structuralist perspective characterised by the work of Amable Veiga prevails. However, since the 1990s, a significant number of studies using generative theory and within the theoretical framework of Optimality Theory, undertaken primarily in North American universities, have addressed the interpretation of some of the most elusive aspects of Galician phonology which have significant theoretical implications. Despite the limitations mentioned, work is currently being carried out on innovative lines and theoretical frameworks which open interesting avenues for the study of still largely unexamined aspects, such as the variation between speakers and between varieties or contact with Spanish, with the incorporation of innovative perspectives, such as the study of perception related to production.
