Metal complexes of Mn (II), Cu (II), Ni (II) and Co (II) with quinoline
derivatives have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, molar
conductance, magnetic movement, electronic spectra, thermal analysis and IR spectral
data. The molecular formula of complexes corresponds to [ML(NO3)2] where M = Mn, Cu,
Ni, Co, Zn, Fe, or Cr. The physicochemical and IR spectral data shows that the ligand
coordinates to the metal ion in bidentate fashion (through the C=N and N-H groups). The
antimicrobial studies of ligand and its metal, metal complexes have been screened for
selected bacteria (E. Coli, S. typhi, B. subtilis and S. aureus) and fungi (A. flavous, A.
niger, P. triticena and F. species). Antimicrobial studies shows that the Mn (II) complexes
are more toxic than other metal complexes. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal
octahedral geometry around the metal ion. The complexes were found to be non
electrolyte in nature on the basis of low value of molar conductance.
