O debate internacional no campo da geoética se concentra em algumas das mais importantes emergências ambientais, enquanto destaca a grande responsabilidade dos geocientistas, independentemente do campo de atuação, e a grande repercussão social, cultural e econômica que suas escolhas tem na sociedade. As conferências Geoitalia 2009 e 2011 em Rimini e Turin, respectivamente, organizadas pela Federação Italiana de Ciências da Terra (Italian Federation of Earth Science), foram dois importantes momentos para a promoção da geoética na Itália. Estas foram devotadas a ressaltar como e com quais ferramentas e conteúdos podem os geocientistas contribuir para a renovação cultural da sociedade. Da mesma forma, abordaram o papel do geocientista na disseminação da informação científica, contribuindo dessa forma para a correta construção do conhecimento social. Geologia é cultura e, como tal, pode ajudar a dissipar equívocos e estereótipos culturais que abrangem fenômenos naturais, desastres, recursos e gestão territorial. A cultura geológica é constituída por métodos, metas, valores, história, maneiras de pensar sobre a natureza e sensibilidade para abordagem de problemas e suas soluções. Logo, a geologia tem que determinar valores de referência, como pré-requisitos indispensáveis para geoética. Juntos, cultura geológica e geoética, podem fortalecer a ligação que fixa pessoas ao seu território e podem ajudar a encontrar soluções e respostas para alguns importantes desafios nos próximos anos, destacando riscos naturais, recursos e mudança climática. A partir dessas considerações, salientamos a importância de critério ético para cientistas da Terra, para focar sua atenção na questão da responsabilidade dos geocientistas e na necessidade de maior clareza na definição de sua identidade científica e do valor de suas especialidades.
The international debate in the field of geoethics focuses on some of the most important environmental emergencies, while highlighting the great responsibilities of ge-oscientists, whatever field they work in, and the important social, cultural and economic repercussions that their choice can have on society. The Geoitalia 2009 and 2011 confe-rences that were held in Rimini and Turin, respectively, and were organized by the Italian Federation of Earth Science, were two important moments for the promotion of geoethics in Italy. They were devoted to the highlighting of how, and with what tools and contents, can the geosciences contribute to the cultural renewal of society. They also covered the active roles of geoscientists in the dissemination of scientific information, contributing in this way to the correct construct of social knowledge. Geology is culture, and as such it can help to dispel misconceptions and cultural stereotypes that concern natural phenomena, disasters, resources, and land management. Geological culture consists of methods, goals, values, history, ways of thinking about nature, and specific sensitivity for approaching problems and their solutions. So geology has to fix referenced values, as indispensable prerequisites for geoethics. Together, geological culture and geoethics can strengthen the bond that joins people to their territory, and can help to find solutions and answers to some important chal-lenges in the coming years regarding natural risks, resources, and climate change. Starting from these considerations, we stress the importance of establishing an ethical criterion for Earth scientists, to focus attention on the issue of responsibility of geoscientists, and the need to more clearly define their scientific identity and the value of their specificities.
