Este ensaio trata da aplicação da noção de colonial tardio para o Rio de Janeiro, na passagem do século XVIII para o XIX, período em que a cidade ter-se-ia convertido na principal Praça marcantil do Atlântico Sul. Com tal objetivo, o texto analisa as mudanças, entre os séculos XVII e XIX, ocorridas nas formas de acumulação da riqueza colonial e no perfil da elite econômica da cidade.
This essay deals with the application of the notion of "colonial tardio” to Rio de Janeiro in the late eighteenth to the early nineteenth century, a period during which the city was converted into the principal market of the South Atlantic With this objective in mind, the text analyzes the changes that occurred between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries in the form of accumulating colonial wealth. The essay also includes a profile of the economic elite of the city.
