The article, after a succinct biographical sketch of Luís de Camões, deals with the presence of the poet and the man at the advent of his fifth centenary, his importance as founder of the modern Portuguese literary language, the vicissitudes of the reception of his work in Portuguese-speaking countries and in throughout the world, of its centrality in the epic genre in Western literature, and of his unshakable permanence.
