A Folia se constitui como “uma
encenação popular de uma prática religiosa
que tem suas raÃzes assentadas numa
representação teológica do nascimento de
Cristo†(Machado, 1998, p.216), e se
organiza dentro de estruturas
hierárquicas. Ao capitão cabe a
responsabilidade sobre a Folia, o
alferes está encarregado dos gastos da
Folia, os foliões tocam e acompanham
o cortejo e ao palhaço fica destinado o
papel cômico, sÃmbolo do deboche,
da diversão e da alegria contidas nesta
festividade.
‘Folia de Reis’ (The Kings Revelry) is a
popular play, that happens in some
regions of Brazil, which consists of a
religious practice. Its goal is to
represent, theologically, the Christ’s
born. Its organized by hierarchical
structures: The ‘Capitão’(Captain) has
the revelry responsibility; the ‘Alferes’
(Second-lieutenant) is in charge of the
costs; the ‘Foliões’ (Revelries) play
instruments and follow the
procession; the ‘Palhaço’(Clown) is the
one who plays the comic, the mocking
symbol of amusement and happiness
contained in this party.
