Os elevados níveis de degradação ambiental impostos às regiões “periféricas” do capitalismo no seu atual estágio de desenvolvimento impõem à educação ambiental um duplo papel histórico: como ferramenta para o exercício da hegemonia por parte das frações dominantes e como instrumento de luta a ser apropriado pela classe trabalhadora em seu movimento de libertação. Nosso objetivo neste texto é, além de apresentar argumentos que sustentem a relevância da categoria marxista da “totalidade” nos processos de formação em educação ambiental crítica que visem à transformação social, discutir algumas implicações práticas que a compreensão desta categoria oferece aos processos educativos formais e não formais.
The high levels of environmental degradation imposed on the 'peripheral' regions of capitalism in its current stage of development requires from the environmental education a double historical role: as a tool for the exercise of hegemony by the dominant fractions and as instrument of struggle to be appropriated by the working class in its movement of liberation. In this work, we aim to present arguments to support the relevance of the Marxist category of "totality" in the training processes on critical environmental education to social transformation and also discuss some practical implications that the understanding of this category offers to formal and informal education.
