A obra Questions of Travel de Elizabeth Bishop, publicada em 1965, agrupa poemas em inglês sobre o Brasil, inspirados na cultura brasileira, revelando o olhar estrangeiro da poeta, desde o primeiro contato com o país à permanência. O objetivo deste artigo é discorrer sobre a poética de Bishop, ressaltando o gênero literatura de viagem, através dos poemas criados a partir de suas vivências no Brasil. Serão abordadas vida e obra, seu vínculo com o Brasil, seu estilo de escrita e o conceito de literatura de viagem, associando os poemas a relatos de viagem. Por conseguinte, sucederá a análise de três poemas selecionados da obra Questions of Travel a fim de refletir sobre as mudanças da percepção de Elizabeth Bishop acerca do Brasil. Para desenvol-ver a biografia da poeta, nos fundamentamos em cartas escritas por Bishop, reunidas por Giroux (1994), em observações de Ellis (1950), Millier (1993) e reflexões de Britto (1999), que agrupou e traduziu poemas de Bishop, ins-pirados no Brasil. No que se refere ao estilo de escrita da poeta, recorremos a Anastácio (1999), Costello (1991) e Robbins (1966), que discutem a sua poesia moderna. A temática de viagens na escrita da poeta é explorada pela perspectiva de Bernlef (1976); e a literatura de viagem, pela perspectiva de Cristóvão (2002), Junqueira (2011), Machado & Pageaux (1994), Ribeiro (2007) e Romano (2013).
Elizabeth Bishop’s “Questions of Travel”, published in 1965, brings together poems in English about Brazil inspired by Brazilian culture, revealing the poet’s foreign gaze, from her first contact with the country to her stay. The purpose of this article is to discuss Bishop’s poetics, highlighting the genre of travel literature through poems created from her experiences in Brazil. Her life and work, her link with Brazil, her writing style and the concept of travel literature will be addressed, associating the poems with travel reports. Therefore, the analysis of three poems selected from “Questions of Travel” will follow in order to reflect on the changes in Elizabeth Bishop’s perception of Brazil. To develop the biography of the poet, we rely on letters written by Bishop, gathered by Giroux (1994), on observations by Ellis (1950), Millier (1993) and reflections by Britto (1999), who grouped and translated poems by Bishop inspired by in Brazil. Regarding the poet’s writing style, we turn to Anastácio (1999), Costello (1991) and Robbins (1966), who discuss her modern poetry. The theme of travel in the poet’s writing is explored from the perspective of Bernlef (1976); and travel literature, from the perspective of Cristóvão (2002), Junqueira (2011), Machado & Pageaux (1994), Ribeiro (2007) and Romano (2013).
