Este artigo propõe analisar a representação da mulher diaspórica no
romance Brick Lane (2003), de Monica Ali. A personagem feminina em questão é
representada por uma bangladeshiana que se muda para a Inglaterra após um casamento
arranjado com Chanu, também bangladeshiano, que vivia em Londres. O objetivo desse
artigo é investigar de que maneira a protagonista é representada no romance, tendo em
vista não só sua experiência em Londres, mas também sua vida em Bangladesh, seu paÃs
de origem. A metodologia de investigação baseia-se em textos teóricos que discutem a
objetificação da mulher, silenciamento e tentativas de agência desenvolvidos por
Ashcroft (1998), Bhabha (1991), Said (2007), Spivak (1987) e outros. Os resultados da
pesquisa mostram que a subjetividade da protagonista é construÃda a partir de uma
mulher submissa, sem ambições para uma mulher moderna e independente. Tal
subjetividade é revelada por meio do revide, instrumento para a emancipação da
personagem.
The representation of the colonized in the novel Brick Lane (2003) by
Monica Ali is analyzed. The female character in focus is represented by a Bangladeshi
woman who moves from her country to England after an arranged marriage with Chanu,
a Bangladeshi male already living in London. The essay investigates how the
protagonist is represented in the novel and describes her experience in her native
country and in England. The methodology consists of applying theoretical texts which
discuss female objectification, silences and attempts towards agency, as developed by
Ashcroft (1998), Bhabha (1991), Said (2007), Spivak (1987) and others. Results show
that the protagonist’s subjectivity has ranged from a submissive unambitious woman
towards an independent and modern woman. This subjectivity is revealed through
resistance which forms the character’s emancipation.
