Objective: to analyze the profile and temporal trend corresponding to hospitalizations in intensive care units due to strokes. Methods: an ecological study with data from the Hospital Information System managed by the Unified Health System, referring to intensive care hospitalizations. Age, gender and stroke types were analyzed. The hospitalization rates were calculated and assessed by means of generalized linear regression models and the Prais-Winsten procedure (statistical significance: p<0.05). Results: an increase in hospitalization rates was observed during the period, with predominance of the male gender and the age group above 60 years old. An upward trend was recorded for unspecified strokes (6.9%; p<0.001) and for reduction in the number of transient events (-7.8%; p<0.001) in men and women alike. Hemorrhagic strokes and sequelae remained stable. Conclusion: the hospitalizations in intensive care units due to strokes were more frequent among men and aged individuals. An increase in the number of unspecified cases was observed, as well as a reduction in transient ischemic events, with stability in the other subtypes, suggesting limitations in diagnostic coding. Contributions to practice: epidemiological monitoring, assistance planning and preventive strategies targeted at at-risk population groups, in addition to helping understand similar scenarios in other Brazilian regions.
